What’s on at CST?<\/strong><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”2_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n In recent years, CST has invested over CHF 100 million in the development of a new, sustainable freight transport system. The project review was completed in spring 2025. In the summer of the same year, an independent external validation confirmed that the system is technically feasible and, in principle, eligible for approval, with positive implications for the environment and transport. CST is backed by over 50 companies from the transport, logistics, retail, finance, insurance, telecoms and energy sectors \u2013 one of the broadest private-sector consortia for an infrastructure project in Switzerland. In response to the delay in the planning permission process, CST initiated a restructuring in 2025. This is working as planned: staff and operating costs have been consistently reduced, and the monthly cash outflow has fallen significantly compared with mid-2024.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” min_height=”312px” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_3,2_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.6″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n Outstanding issues<\/strong><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”2_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n During the validation process, questions regarding the demonstration of economic and social benefits remained unresolved. The Swiss Government classified these uncertainties as decisive and ordered a halt to planning at CST and the suspension of the authorisation procedure in September 2025. The tunnel has therefore not been abandoned, but is not currently feasible. Resolving this issue does not lie solely in the hands of CST, but requires the political will to create the necessary framework conditions. The Federal Act on the Underground Transport of Goods (UG\u00fcTG) – which serves as the basis for a private operator – in itself does not provide a stable framework for private capital.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” background_color=”#ECF9F7″ min_height=”207px” custom_margin=”-70px||10px||false|false” custom_padding=”||0px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_3,2_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.6″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n What we\u2019re working on<\/strong><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”2_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n CST is scaling back its operational activities to a minimum and preserving the company\u2019s financial stability so that it is ready to resume planning once the political framework is in place. This does not mean the project has been abandoned; it will retain its capacity to act over the next 10 to 15 years. At the same time, CST is putting its expertise to use with the aim of securing political support for the framework \u00a0necessary for a future revival of the project. During the autumn session of Parliament in 2025, the Federal Council stated that the door would remain open for CST, even if the regulatory framework remained unchanged for the time being.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” min_height=”271px” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_3,2_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.6″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n \u00a0Interest from abroad<\/strong><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”2_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.8″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n There is genuine international interest in the technology developed by CST, with the strongest interest coming from Japan: in August 2026, CST welcomed a delegation from the Japanese Highway Industry Development Organisation (HIDO) in Olten for a technical exchange. The visit confirmed that CST is recognised as a technology and systems partner across the entire value chain \u2013 from technology and operations to economic efficiency and governance. CST is keeping its options open regarding the marketing of its cable car and conveyor technology. Hans-Peter Dreier is elected to the Board of Directors at the annual shareholders’ meeting.<\/p>\n June:<\/strong> The Federal Council adopts the first version of the Sectoral Plan for Underground Goods Transport, allowing the project to be developed further.<\/p>\n August:<\/strong> An independent review confirms that CST is feasible technologically and in terms of construction,as a sustainable, environmentally friendly underground logistics system for urban distribution.<\/p>\n September:<\/strong> The Swiss government announces that additional clarifications are necessary for the realisation of the first section before the sectoral planning process can be resumed. At the same time, it confirms its support for the CST vision.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n\n\t\t\n\t<\/div>\n\t\n\n\t\n<\/div>\n\n\n In February:<\/strong> The federal government launches the consultation of the cantons on the \u201cUnderground freight transport\u201d section of the sectoral transport plan.<\/p>\n In April: <\/strong>The network extension study with Bern on four route options has been completed. It shows that a future with the CST Bern-Thun-Biel network extension will bring considerable added value and positive development for the canton.<\/p>\n In June: <\/strong>The Board of Directors is conducting an in-depth review of CST’s planning to date. The project review incorporates the cantons’ feedback from the sectoral plan process and aims to optimize construction and operation.<\/p>\n in October: <\/strong>Christian Sp\u00e4th becomes the new CEO of Cargo sous terrain. He takes over the project review in order to lead the generation project into the next phase. <\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n\n\t\t\n\t<\/div>\n\t\n\n\t\n<\/div>\n\n\n In January:<\/strong> Cargo sous terrain begins with work in the field: with the help of geophysical measurements and test drillings, CST explores the subsoil along the first section of the route between H\u00e4rkingen and Zurich. The knowledge gained about geology and groundwater is used to advance the approval process.<\/p>\n In October:<\/strong> An updated materiality analysis<\/a> with the latest planning parameters and findings on CST confirms its environmental benefits: CST offers significantly positive environmental effects compared to future scenarios with a freight supply without CST, even in a future with electrified and hydrogen heavy-goods vehicles.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n\n\t\t\n\t<\/div>\n\t\n\n\t\n<\/div>\n\n\n In October: <\/strong>Together with the city of Zurich, CST launches the pilot project Sal\u00fcBox<\/a>. Four parcel boxes in Zurich are to provide information on the use of such “Smart Stations” for bundling the transport of goods in the city by 2024.<\/p>\n In August: <\/strong> The Federal Law on Underground Freight Transport (UG\u00fcTG) comes into force on 1 August.
